Two and a half months between school ending in May and starting up again in August is a long time – long enough, in fact, to spend time with family or watch some new or different movies with friends.
With every year of high school bringing more and more academic challenges, students have a limited amount of downtime. Although a series of dual strikes have impacted overall production in the past year, Campo students took the liberty of naming their favorite movies and TV shows from over the summer.
“I didn’t really watch any movies, but I watched Despicable Me 4 at the Walnut Creek movie theater,” offered sophomore Greta Kenderski when questioned. “I went with friends.” As a new release, Despicable Me 4 is not only a family-friendly movie, but relates back to other, well-known Despicable Me movies that remind people of their childhoods. Kenderski also mentioned the ever-popular The Summer I Turned Pretty series, highlighting the characters as something she enjoyed.
On the other hand, freshman Quinn Seaholm talked about watching Top Gun: Maverick. “It’s my favorite, I watched it at home,” he said. “I enjoyed the action scenes, the overall story narration.” He also added how active he usually is outside of school, leaving him limited time to watch movies. “I would recommend Top Gun to people who like action movies and fight scenes,” he suggested.
Junior Emma Hudak added variety to the typical summer movies by highlighting her favorites: “I watched this new horror movie, Long Legs, that a lot of people online were talking about. It’s [about] this girl who’s a detective, and she’s trying to solve a murder case. The murderer is this really creepy guy, and it involves Satan worshippers.” Her long-standing familiarity with films also led her to watch an additional new release, Twisters, involving storm chasers going after tornadoes. “I didn’t really like it, it was too much,” Hudak said. “I don’t like blockbuster movies, there was a lot of action that I didn’t really enjoy. It was just a rollercoaster.”
As the school year begins again, students have less and less time to enjoy movies; it’s important to indulge in fun experiences with friends and family, especially when it comes to viewing the newest and most popular films of the year.
