Students and staff came together during the week of September 25th through the 30th for Campo’s homecoming, filled with an abundance of events and spirit. With the game, dance, and rally, the whole student body helped out for a week of celebration. This year, Campo’s theme was “Cougs-R-Us”, where different grades were assigned different toys for the homecoming week.
Freshman Finley Cattell, a leadership representative, said the themes for each grade were chosen, “both periods of leadership came together to come up with some broad themes that included four sub-themes, and then we voted.” Seniors were Hot Wheels, juniors were Barbie, sophomores were Legos, and freshmen were Build-a-bear.
On Monday, the theme surrounded Hot Wheels, representing the senior’s theme. Students wore black and white in all different styles including dresses, matching sets, and everything in between. Some participants even sported black and white while playing in the powder puff game at lunch. Since it was the first game, it included all of the grades.
The freshmen were recognized on Tuesday, as the school wore pajamas and brought stuffed animals to school. Plaid pajama pants, “Comfy’s”, and hoodies were worn by students around school. Freshman Kyle Pearlstien said she liked Pajama Day because “[she] felt so comfy all day.”
Wednesday represented the sophomore’s theme. The day was based on a song from “The Lego Movie”, where students went with either “everything is awesome” and wore neon, or “everything is cool when you’re part of a team” and wore sports jerseys or anything related to their sport. At lunch, there was the Homecoming T-shirt distribution. The freshman shirts were blue, the sophomore’s were red, the junior’s were white, and the senior’s were red.
In addition to Wednesday’s spirit day and T-shirt distribution, the second powder puff game occurred at lunch, with the seniors and juniors both winning their games, which set them up to play during halftime at the Homecoming football game on Friday.
On Thursday, students were encouraged to model after a line from the Barbie movie, where Ken said “My job, it’s just beach” for the junior’s theme. Students dressed up in their beach attire, ready to swim. Some wore bikini tops over their clothes, others had goggles on their head, and many wore tropical shirts or outfits with leis.
As Friday rolled around, the Cougars showed their school spirit by wearing their class homecoming shirts or class colors.
Friday was also complemented by the rally during academy. The school gathered in the big gym to enjoy the activities planned by the leadership classes. After the annual rally video was shown, the rally leaders did the traditional roll call.
After all the typical introductions for the rally, the main events kicked off with a game of dodgeball: students vs. staff. After the teachers lost most of their players to the students, the school’s mascot joined the last remaining teacher, Ryan Boyd. The game continued, with Boyd getting hit by a dodgeball, and the mascot finishing out the game strong. Eventually, the game came to a close with a neck-to-neck battle with freshmen Lily Holloway and Ellis Culleton against Leonardo DeCatrio the Cougar.
The Competition Cheer team then performed their homecoming routine for the student body, completed with flipping and huge amounts of cheering from the crowd of students and teachers.
After, the football players performed a cheerleading routine, choreographed by the cheer team. This included some stunting, cartwheels, and even a “Dirty Dancing” reenactment. Senior Shane Harris lifted junior Matthew Sugiyama above his head to recreate the classic scene from the movie. Senior Jade Wong, a cheerleader on the Sideline team, said “my favorite moment in the rally was when we performed with the football team…[it was] very fun.”
Finally, some student contestants competed in a game of Family Feud. Questions included “Most Common Slang”, which freshman Lane Kish answered very confidently, “slay”, and who the funniest Campo teachers were, which ended with some teachers, like Jamie Donohoe, feeling sad when they weren’t one of the answers.
After a nail-biting game, the game closed out with a last-minute Homecoming Proposal. Freshman Braeden Baldwin asked freshman Lane Kish to homecoming with a “Let’s Rally, HOCO?” sign, with Kish agreeing and the school erupting in applause.
The rally concluded with a video about the football team’s success to get everyone excited for the homecoming game later that night, where Campo crushed Benicia with a final score of 48-0.
