Former teen heartthrob Aaron Carter provided Moraga with some uncharacteristic excitement when he performed Saturday at the Commons. Sponsored by Saint Mary’s College’s student activities fund, the concert featured Carter’s classic hits “Aaron’s Party” and “That’s How I Beat Shaq,” as well as a new song from the artist’s upcoming album and covers of current hits “Uptown Funk” and “Blurred Lines”.
The triple-platinum artist performed on the Commons stage in front of a crowd of 200 people, mostly Saint Mary’s students. Afterwards, those who paid $50 for VIP tickets enjoyed a meet and greet with the singer.
I reached out to Aaron about 20 minutes before the show. He was sitting in his van behind the Commons stage, guarded by security. As soon as Aaron came out, I asked him for a quick interview after the show. “Of course!” he said, and jumped onstage.
1 and a half hours later, I peppered the biggest pop star of my elementary school days with the following questions.
Why Moraga?
I think they requested me, or something like that. I have an agent, and he’s amazing. His name’s Alex Ross, and he books me great shows. This is one of the college shows he booked for me but it turned out to be much better than I thought.
How was the show?
Amazing. The girls, the guys, everybody. Just as much energy as I hoped for.
What has influenced your music the most?
The fans. I started off where I wasn’t an artist. I just did stuff that people told me to do, so eventually [the fans] started inspiring me, and you can kind of see that kind of stuff when it comes to bands like One Direction. Look at those guys; they started off the way they did and then they developed into great artists.
What’s the best thing to happen at one of your concerts?
Crowd-surfing, people streaking on stage, fun stuff like that.
What’s the craziest thing that has ever been printed about you?
Oh my god, so much. Probably old relationship drama that wasn’t accurate. I’ll leave it at that and you can fill in the blanks.
What’s your dream collaboration?
Rita Ora.
Do you still get nervous?
Not really. I just love it. It’s been something that’s been so good to me, so when I go up there it’s like where I’m supposed to be. And then life outside of that is kind of weird.
Best advice ever given to you?
Just enjoy yourself. Don’t be too concerned with everyone’s perception [of you]. Kind of easier said than done, though.
Final thoughts about the Moraga fans?
I love them, I love all of you guys. You guys were very supportive. I hope I get to see you when I start releasing new music and touring again.
