This summer, while most Cougars lounged by the pool, or lined up at Yogurt Shack, Campolindo Senior Daphne Wang combined her passion for art with her leadership skills to create a mural that both beautifies the campus and highlights the schools diverse tech programs.
As a step in earning her Eagle rank in Scouts, Wang designed, organized, and painted a mural for Campolindo’s tech building, putting in over 100 hours over the summer to complete it for this years Cougars. “I wanted to do an Eagle Project that was related to my interests—obviously art,” Wang said.
The mural, inspired by The Great Wave off Kanagawa, is a homage to woodblock print artwork, and reimagines the famous print through a modern lens. “It’s a tech room inspired by the Great Wave,” Wang explained. Each part of the design symbolizes different classes in Campo’s tech department. Wood, Auto, Video, and Engineering, these words collectively form the acronym W.A.V.E. pictured in the corner of the mural.
Beyond its aesthetic value, Wang’s mural reminds Cougars of the importance of giving back to the community. In order to complete the massive project Daphne leaned on the help of many students, friends, and community volunteers. “I got people to volunteer to help, mostly family friends and some Campo students,” Wang said, explaining how the mural was a team-effort.
Although the mural is community-centered, Wang admits that the process taught her to balance artistic desire with purpose. “It’s not my own personal work,” she reflected. “I’d never do commission, but it helped me learn to focus on what the beneficiary would want, to give back to the community.”
Now complete, Campolindo students can appreciate the mural as a testament to their schools tech programs and Wang’s lasting impact. “I did it here, for Campo,” Wang said.“To beautify the campus and to leave my mark.”
