While some interests come with time and develop through experience, junior Marlo Goeller’s passion for music has been a constant in her life for as long as she can remember. From playing a variety of instruments to producing and writing music, Goeller has so far released one album, an EP (a mini album), and a single in her artistic career. Additionally, Goeller recently headlined for her own show in Berkeley this past February.
“I’ve always really loved music,” Goeller mused, adding that she began writing music when she was 11 and started producing in a studio at 13. “A lot of people enjoy it so I just kept doing it.”
Goeller produces a variety of music. While she stated in a past article that jazz inspired her the most, there are a variety of genres that she feels she derives inspiration from as well. “At the moment I really like writing a lot of folk music, even though a lot of the music I put out is more R&B,” Goeller admitted. “I think that folk comes more naturally to me.”
Goeller mentioned that she finds every step of the music process to be fun, especially when it comes to working with others who are equally as passionate and love music.“They bring their own ideas and their own spice to it. It’s so fun to see someone else be excited about your work and creatively add to something that you care a lot about.”
Along with Goeller’s passion for her musical interests, she also stated that “I’m really lucky that I have the resources to afford recording software,” recognizing the privileges she has as a producer and artist.
Goeller’s most recent performance was not her first time performing for a live audience, but it was her first time headlining at a venue dedicated to her artistry. When asked about her recent experience in preparing to be the headliner she replied, “It’s been really fun writing parts out for the horn players. It’s a lot of work because you have to coordinate with band people and all your equipment… but it’s always really fun and super rewarding so I am excited.”
Goeller continues to perform at a variety of live venues and make music with other like minded artists with the goal that she may keep enjoying her career.
“Find as many people as possible who are also interested in writing or making music,” Goeller concluded when asked for advice to others who were interested in pursuing such music careers. “If you network with enough other kids who are really passionate, someone will know how to record, someone will know how to play the instruments you can’t play and it will all come together really nicely.”
Goeller’s music can be found on all music platforms.
