Both boys and girls varsity swimming proved victorious against the Alahambra Bulldogs, during their first home meet on March 15.
The swimmers approached the meet with confidence. Senior varsity swimmer Camile Caldwell said, “I felt pretty good because I know that Alahambra wasn’t one of our toughest competitors.”
Senior Megan Liang attributed the win to both standout swimmers, and the team’s depth. Liang said, “We have a really strong team over all. Each event we have swimmers who are really strong and combined we make a great team.”
“I felt like the team could get good times because it’s our first home meet,” sophomore Spencer Tagg added. According to Liang, swimming in their own pool “makes a difference because we train there, so we know the blocks, and we know the water.”
She added, “It’s like we’re playing on our own turf. Parents get to watch and we get lots of support from our friends, and it’s just more spirited at home.”
According to Caldwell, Campo took the lead from the start, during the medley relays.
Tagg improved his 100m backstroke time by a second and dipped under 60 seconds in the 100 fly. He said, “It was my first time swimming the 100 fly, so it sets the bar pretty high.”
“For someones first time swimming [the 100 fly], thats a really good time,” said Liang.
“I felt pretty sore after my swims,” Tagg added. “I was pretty excited to win our first home meet.”
Campo also won their previous meet, against Dougherty Valley High School.
Overall, Caldwell said, “Our team did really well and most people were swimming their off events, but they had a good attitude about it and we did well.” Competing in “off events” means that athletes were participating in strokes that they do not usually swim.
The next meet for Campo will be on March 29 against Dublin High School at Dublin.
