No Room for Complacency with New Presidency

I breathed a huge sigh of relief when Joe Biden was sworn in as President on January 20. There seemed to be so much hope that we would finally have serious leadership in Washington D.C. to tackle the major issues that we face in our country. And although our jubilation is justified, we simply don’t have the option to stay complacent. In order to bring real change to America, we must realize that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are not the ends all be all of injustice and strife in our country. It’s important to hold our elected leaders accountable and ensure that they are fighting for all.

As young people, we have a special duty to fight, since we will inherit the problems that older generations have thrown upon us. At its current trajectory, our world seems to be getting much bleeker, with no real substantive solutions being offered for climate change nor the return to a COVID-19 free society, but we must persevere.

President Biden has rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement, repealed the transgender military ban, and ended construction on the Keystone Pipeline to name a few of some necessary 1st steps in the right direction. However, there is still a very long way to go to repair a country ravaged by division, disease, and more. We cannot be complacent, and with nearly 4 years to allocate for the changes we want to see, we must push this administration to enact systemic change.

1 way to be active in shaping our government is simply by finding what issue you are passionate about solving. From conserving the environment to combating racial justice, our society is definitely not short of major problems that need to be addressed. Volunteering, joining a club, or donating are all easy ways to help shape the world around you for the better.

Staying caught up with the news is another crucial way to fight for causes affecting us. Many times we don’t fight for justice simply because we aren’t well informed. By reading unbiased news, we can stay vigilant in helping others around us. It’s also essential to spread information about these causes to people that may be less informed. By spreading awareness, we can have a real consensus about the changes that are needed.

Let’s have a mindset of change and try to transform the world for our own future to come. With a new President, we have the opportunity to help push for real change in government. We can’t waste this precious opportunity.
