The Academic Decathlon team celebrated its recent success with an awards ceremony on February 17 in the library.
According to team captain Katie Coates, the team secured a place in the regional competition with a victory in the county championships. The regional event is scheduled for March.
At the ceremony, 2nd and 3rd place medals for each category in each division of the county competition were handed out.”There are medals for overall highest score in each grade, and finally there are awards for whoever won the Super Quiz competition in the Jeopardy round,” said Coates.
The jeopardy round is an event where the students attempt to answer several questions of varying topics in a short period of time.
Coates explained, “We gave out all the individual awards and they told us which members of our team ranked high enough to continue to state. We can only take 9 people to state, and at the ceremony they told us which 9 qualified. We were also told that our team is moving on to the regional competition.”
“Right now I’m wearing a silver for social studies,” said freshman Ashley Zhang. “Most people got multiple medals. They handed out a lot.”
“The medal I’m wearing right now is the one for the winning team,” explained Coates.
Freshman Regina Kong received three medals. “I got a bronze medal for ‘speech,’ a bronze medal for ‘literature,’ and I got a silver medal for the overall grade division,” explained Kong.
